Paul Mon

Artist

After a long career in architecture and construction, I rediscovered painting in the spring of 2023 and found a new way to bring my experience with structure, space, and light into a full-time studio practice.

My work is deeply inspired by the landscapes of Iceland—its dramatic light, expansive spaces, rugged forms, and ever-changing atmosphere. Working in oil, acrylic, and watercolour, I explore the balance between structure and spontaneity, often building my oil and acrylic paintings with a palette knife to create texture, energy, and a sense of movement.

For me, painting is a way of seeing the landscape anew—transforming observation and experience into something expressive and deeply engaging.

Approach

Every painting starts from the same place: looking closely, then building something honest from what I see. A long career in architecture and construction shaped how I read light, structure, and material — and that same eye now goes into paintings of Iceland's glaciers and skies, with the oil and acrylic work built up mostly with a palette knife. I welcome inquiries about original work and commissions — get in touch if a piece speaks to you.
